Old business:

It was discussed when we could get the lights up in Pioneer Park. Jake, Javelin and Jim will try to get together next week to get them up.

New business:

Judy Coleman reported that Danielle Raines was interested in doing a “games” night fundraiser out at 7-Feathers. She is looking for volunteers to help. It will be a 3-chamber co-op and money will be split between them. Pam Y., Jake Y, Joanne, and Judy C will attend the first meeting to get the information. Meeting will be held December 13^th from 3-5 PM.
Joanne also reported she read in the News Review about Upward Bound wanting to do some volunteer work. It was suggested that we may be able to use some of these students.

Upcoming events:

Tree lighting and downtown after hours tonight! Please get your maps from Pam L. at bead Mecca.
Festival of Trees Sunday December 6^th for families. Cost is just 2.50 per family.
16^th annual Timber Truckers Parade December 12^th.
Lions Christmas baskets December 18^th.

Guest Speakers:

Pam Frank from Mercy Foundation spoke about the “Healthy Kids Outreach Program”. Healthy Kids Program helps families who need help with healthcare in addition to nurses who go into the schools to educate on heath care. If you would like more information on this program please contact Pam at pamelafrank@chiwest.com

Old business:

· Joanne and Pam L. wanted to remind everyone they will be coming around with the business survey. Please take the time to fill out and return. Please contact Pam L at pam@canvonvillechamber.org if you need one or have not received one. In addition there will be a customer survey questionnaire being handed out. If you need one or have question please contact Pam as well.

New business:

· It was voted on and passed the Canyonville Chamber donate to the Canyonville Lions club $500 for the Christmas baskets. Chuck M. also reported they received $500 from the Canyonville Masons.

· The Canyonville Christmas lights are up! Thank you all who made this possible!

If you would like to contribute to the light fund please contact Judy Coleman at Rays Sentry Market in Canyonville.

· Jake Young reported that Spring Hills (The company that published our Canyonville, Riddle and Myrtle Creek maps) had contacted him. They wanted to know if we were interested in a free hyper-link to our web-site. A motion was made by Pam Y. and seconded by Javelin O. that we accept the link. It was voted on and accepted by all.

· Nominations were made for next year’s Chamber President, Secretary, Vice President, and Treasurer. Below are the nominations:

Vice President: Tamara Hoff-Nominated by Chuck M and 2^nd by Jake y.

· Ted R. spoke about the 16^th annual timber truckers light parade. It will be held on Dec 12, 2009. The theme is “The Timber Industry” Parade leaves D.R. Johnson mill and will go through Riddle, out Old Pacific Hwy, through Tri-city and Myrtle Creek. If you would like more information or would like an application please call 541-874-2231.

· Ted also reported The Myrtle Creek City Council also approved the new “Gateway” sign. Victory Builders will be completing the work.

EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS-

· Ugly sweater contest and downtown Christmas Celebration on December 4^th. Please pick up your score card from Bead Mecca. You could be eligible for a grand prize of $50.00 in addition to some great goodies some of the business may be handing out! If you need more info or would like to add your business to the list please contact Pam at pam@beadmecca.com

· Tree lighting ceremony will be held in front of Ken’s Sidewalk Café on December 4^th at 5:30 PM. Some business will be open late. There will be cookies, and hot chocolate.

· Riddle Chamber is hosting a “Civil War Party” at the Myrtle Creek Elks lodge. On December 3^rd. Please contact Riddle chamber of commerce for tickets.

· Light Parade December 12^th

· December 18^th the Lions club will be putting the food baskets together. Please come out and help. If you know of a name or can help please contact Nancy Bigelow @ 541-839-6614.

Old business:

· Judy Coleman reported 52 food baskets were given out to families in need through out South County. Thank you Cow Creek Tribe of Indians for the donation.

· SUVA gallery in Canyonville is seeking quality art, and handcrafted gifts. It is located in a historic building in downtown Canyonville. If you would like more information please contact pam@suvagallery.com .

· Get ready… Tiger Cards will be out shortly. Have your “goodies” ready. Our kids have done a great job! No missed days!!

New Business

· We are handing out booklets to find out what area(s) most of our business or customers are coming from. If you did not receive one please call the Canyonville chamber to request one.

· The Welcome to Canyonville Fountain needs to be cleaned on or about every three months. Steve Kelly with SUSD said he will go to the training given by Victory Builders and volunteer to clean the fountain time permitting.

· Pam L. reported “Promise Natural Foods” was selected as business of the month. Congratulations! Pam also reported that she will be working with Bob Chaney on the extended highway 99 signs. They signs will have to be approved by the city council and county. More to follow.

· The Christmas celebration will be held on December 4^th 2009. There will be singing, Christmas tree lighting (5:30 Pm) and an “Ugly Christmas Sweater” contest and party on the same night. Grand prize will be $50.00!. Please register at Bead Mecca for a map and scorecard. Contact Pam@canyonvillechamber.org.

· A Business Owners survey was handed out. If you received one please take the time to complete and return to Bead Mecca. If you have not received one contact Pam @ pam@canyonvillechamber.org for one. Please take the time with the surveyors if they come to your business. We are trying to improve “your” town.

Speakers:

· Danielle Raines with 7-Feathers asked if there were any business that would like to participate with them during conventions. Danielle was asking if there were some who would be willing to offer discounts, classes, coupons etc… while conventions were being held. Please contact Danielle at draines@sevenfeathers.com Danielle also reported on a SOVA customer service class to be held. The class would be approximately 3 hours long and held on February 28^th and March 1^st. If you or one of your employees would like to come please contact Danielle at the email address listed above.

· Tim Freeman spoke on the SUSD proposal and expressed the fact that he thought it was done well and would benefit all the kids.

It was reported the Pumpkin Festival went well. The numbers were not in and will be reported next week.

Jim Siegel reported approximately 850.00 was made on the Rodeo.
Downtown Trick or Treating was another great success this year. Thanks to all who came out to participate.
It does not look like we will be buying the new chamber decals for the year 2011 (we have 2010) due to rising costs. T. Hoff said will look into making them.

NEW BUSINESS:

The downtown assoc will be coming around with a business survey. Please take the time with them. Your input will be very helpful.
Doug Sales is working on a Christmas celebration happening after the Christmas tree lighting. He would like for retail business to extend their hours for that evening. If you would like more information please call Doug at Kens Sidewalk Café.
SUVA will be doing an Art Gallery. They are looking for contemporary or recycled arts. Please contact pam@suvagallery.com

The ring toss booth raised about $800.00.

Tamara will let people know about meetings for the Pumpkin & music festival to be held on Oct 17Th.

Steve from the SUSD wanted to thank all the sponsors again. We are on the 8Th day of school and so far everything is going smoothly. Enrollment is up from the end of the year last year. The board meeting last night was canceled and has been rescheduled for next Wednesday at 6:30. They will be interviewing candidates for the open Canyonville Board position.

The Rodeo starts at 3:30 on the 19Th we need volunteers to run the food booth. Please contact Judy for more info.

Next Thursday at 6:30 the 17Th is a Business Mixer at Forest Glenn. There will be several presenters and drinks and snacks will be served.

Rick came down and cleaned the filters for the North welcome sign. If we can get enough volunteers, Phil will come down and teach us how to do it ourselves. It should be cleaned monthly.
The water timer issues have been fixed.

Canyonville Feed and Ranch has been voted the business of the Month. He would also like to host a mixer in the middle of December. There will be food and live music. Gordon is also interested in trying to put together a local music show for Monday nights to be held at Pioneer Park. He will start researching to see if we could bring in enough people and talent.

The last Oregon 150 chili feed will be on Oct 3rd.

Doug from Ken's has someone to provide Bales of Hay for our October decorations. They are 5.00/each and will be delivered. Please let him know as soon as possible if you want to be included.

October 12Th is the Columbus Day Bunco night. Please purchase your tickets soon they sell out fast.

September 26Th is the Oregon 150 Celebration at the fairgrounds. Volunteers are needed.

Pioneer Days is over. The Jail made around 550.00, the pie auction about 5500.00. A big thank you goes out to Rod Miller and Seven Feathers for building and donating the Jail, and all the Sheriffs for donating there time to make the arrests. Next year we might offer photos of the detainees. We had a great crowd with a couple complaints some of the tents were vandalized. Tamara will be taking over the application process. Seven feathers will continue to mark spaces and organize vendors. The performers may change for next year. Tentatively we have a Dean Martin impersonator for next year. Next year try to get more ads for entertainment. (on the radio and news papers) All the T-shirts sold!! We still have some hats available.

We'll have the space we need for the 150 @ the the fairgrounds.

The all staff meeting for the school district went very well. They wanted to thank everyone and handed out certificates of appreciation to those businesses that sponsored the event. The enrollment is up and the first day of school went well.

The timer on the north welcome sign is not coming on at the right times we will figure out what the problem is. Do we want to coordinate the lights and water? At this time the lights will stay on.

Lions Club BBQ made about 1000.00 to help with the sight and hearing fund. They have discussed adding a little variety of meats next year.

Dean Kelley won the TV raffle. He was very excited needless to say.

The Canyonville School Committee earned about 1000.00.

Hestehaven will not be renewing there sign on the board.

September 18 there is a scenic byway opening in Scottsburg.

Tim Freeman's office would like to schedule time to talk about the budget and current the legislator.

A marketing workshop with UCDC has been scheduled for Wednesday Sept 30Th 2-3:30 at City Hall.

The new addition to the reader board is almost done. It just needs to be stained.

Dec 4Th is the 2ND annual city wide tree lighting.

Rodeo is Sept 19 & 20Th. We will pass a volunteer calender around at next weeks meeting.

The annual Columbus Day Bunco event will happen again at El Paraiso. Tickets are 25.00/each.

Oct 17Th is the annual Pumpkin and Music Celebration. Tamara is needing volunteers.

Oct 3rd is the last Oregon 150 Chili Cook off for Canyonville.

Pioneer Days kicks off on Sat. we will be serving root beer floats and selling badges. Volunteers are still needed for root beer floats and to be sheriffs. The TV raffle is going great. The tickets will be on sale through Pioneer days. KPIC commercials start tomorrow. They donated $3216.00 worth of air time and production. 5,000.00 inserts will be in the News Review, Canyonville Feed and Ranch donated the inserts.

SUSD had a board meeting and Sue Moran resigned. We need to fill the position. The last day to register is Sept. 7Th. They will interview at the district office no vote will be held to replace her.

If there are problem "visitors" please send them to the fireman's booth.

Jake motioned and Jim seconded to put the ad in the News Review for Pioneer days.

Please contact Madilyn if you have anything for the newsletter and contact Dan Barzee for the website. We need to get more organized to have everything updated with current schedules.

There has been another management change at the Leisure inn.

Tim Freeman has a 15 min. presentation about current legislation if we are interested in hearing. Schedule for a future meeting.

There will be a Intro to new businesses in the paper on the 25Th.

There is a Open House for all SUSD staff at Seven Feathers on the 26th. 225-230 people are expected. Teachers will have a catered lunch but other staff are going to be heading downtown to enjoy some local merchants. The local service merchants have sponsored the after meeting drinks. School starts on Aug 31st. Our Mainstreet Bridge newsletter will be doing an article on the new Superintendent and his history.

We are still looking for Pies for the Pie Auction. We also need help with breaking down the shelving after so the next scheduled performer can go on. Call Carol Malmay with questions.
We have the jail for Pioneer days and it is wonderful. Thanks go out to seven feathers for building it for us.

Jake received another power bill for the new sign. It is around 120.00. We need to talk to Erwin about a timer to cut cost.
Lions Club may help with the elect cost.

The memorabilia for Pioneer days is arriving. Hats aren't expected for another couple of days but T-shirts are here and for sale. You can purchase them at the pharmacy and at the info desk at Pioneer days. Reserved seating tickets are on sale at Ken's and raffle tickets are available almost everywhere. Nan and Judy will help sell tickets for raffle on Monday morn at the post office and Marie and Joy will sell at Rays Monday afternoon. Brian will be taking some to his church also.

The fire dept. is buying a new engine. They will be demoing a truck Tuesday afternoon at the fire hall if anyone would like to see it. They haven't had a new truck since 1980.

The Elks motorcycle run brought in about 30-35 bikes and 100 people. They provided a lot of non-perishables for our reservists families and an additional $111.00 was also raised and donated.

Carl White can add 2 more rows allowing for 10 more signs on the business sign at Rays. Jake motioned, Javelin second to have Carl get them up and have the proceeds go to the electric bill on the sign.

Aug 26Th there is an all staff meeting welcome back for about 225 SUSD employees. It will be held at the Convention Center at Seven Feathers. Going to try and set up a discount with local food businesses to offer to employees to draw them downtown. School starts 8/31. Local service business have offered to pool and sponsor the after meeting drinks. Jake's Auto, Canyonville chiropractic, Coleman Apts, Hoff's Real Estate, Bloemendahl Tax, Hometown Ins, Promise Natural Foods and Canyonville Message Therapy.

Tamara had a call from Wildlife Safari they will be bringing an Alligator, Python and two lizards from 3-5pm on sat at Pioneer Days.There will be daily events listed on a sandwich board. There are only 2 more Pioneer Days Committee meetings. there are still selling tickets for the raffle of the TV and seats for the entertainment. An info booth will be open this year selling t-shirts and hats.

Three bills came in to pay Jake motioned, Javelin second to pay.

So far 500 lunches have been given away by the YMCA at the park. They have one more week to go. Get Fit will start up again Sept 14 and runs til Nov 20Th. The prize will be a Y membership and cost 5.00/week.
The Y will be closing the week before Labor day for Yearly maint.

Lions Club BBQ will be at the Old Tyme Family Album again this year proceeds to benefit Pioneer Days.

There is a Cycle run from the Myrtle Creek Elks lodge to Galesville Reservoir on the 9Th. Please meet or bring canned foods to donate. Baskets will be made for reservists families that have been deployed.

We have for the Oregon 150 at the fairgrounds on Sept 26Th is reserved. We have a center space. We need to get our stuff together pictures, and who is going to be there to talk about the town.

Sherry Roberts from Seven Feathers is doing the graphics for our buttons. We will have the Beard badge, Jail badge and 150 badge. Stephanie and Pam are going to make them when the time comes.

Non-profits can now advertise on the local radio station for free. Contact john@krem.org to place the ad.

The sidewalk project has started. They are currently working on moving the existing underground lines.

Tim Freeman said the 75Th session has now ended for the state representatives. They discussed 1200 bills and increased the budget by 9% from last year. Inflation is currently at a standstill. There is a 21% increase in budget for the state government. DHS is has a 30% increase from last year.

The yard sale is almost here. Javelin has maps at Promise, you can also pick them up at the visitors center and the park on Saturday. They will be serving Blueberry pancakes and eggs from 8-11 and Hot dogs from 11-3. Pam put our over 80 signs and placed public service announcements. Javelin needs electric griddles and skillets for cooking on sat. Zack, Steve, Jake, Joy, Tamara and Judy have volunteered to help. Be there at 6-7am to help.

The South Umpqua School District hat there first board meeting. It was the annual reorganization meeting. Jeff Johnson has retained the chair position and Bob Ankeny is the Vice-chair. One of the topics is returning the middle school to Canyonville. Steve the new Superintendent is working on a lot of projects and everything seems to be moving along.

Saturday evening is the Music for Music benefit in the parking lot of Rays. There will be hot dogs, chips and a drink for $4.00. It will run from 6-8pm.

Nest Tuesday the Pioneer Day Committee has a meeting at Ken's Sidewalk cafe at 12pm.

Javelin needs more entries for the bed races at Pioneer Days.

The Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge has a scholarship dinner. Its $20.00/ person and the scholarship winners will be reading there essays. The Golf tournament is Sunday with a 9am tee off. teams are 4 people.

Friday there is an auction at the casino for Douglas County Youth Development.

Shane Hancock has opened a branch of Pennsylvania Life in South County. The company has been around for 119 years. It focuses on the self employed and families. They also can help with Medicare and Medicare Supplements.

Seven Feathers had a new banner made for Pioneer Days and it should be hung soon.

We received the first power bill for the north sign. We need to look into grants or get some ideas to help cover cost.
A BIG thank you goes out to Ray Bigelow and The Canyonville South Umpqua Fire Dept. for helping and upkeep on the sign!!!

The yard sale is coming along. There are a few people who have rented space at the park. We will need help getting items from Bead Mecca to Pioneer Park. Jake, Steve will help move. Please Bring donations to Park between 7-8am on 18Th.

Cheryl is going to find out if we can advertise on local radio. 92.1FM Canyonville radio station plays country. The 4J school dist is broadcasting.

Brett Moan sent a Thank You card for the scholarship.

We have the plans for the bleacher cover at Pioneer Park. It will be 17'.2" tall with a 2' lip above and below to help with shade. We will have space available for pictures. It will go out to bid.

We will order the Root beer float supplies for the Olde Tyme Album. It is the weekend before Pioneer Days.We will have a metal pot engraved for the "Chamber Pot" for the Olde Tyme Family Album award.

The Band Jam is the evening of the 18Th at rays.Joy Curtis and Tamara will sell Raffle tickets at rays for the TV. The drawing is August 30Th at 4pm.

We are asking for help from the City Council and Lions Club for the 150. We need to get pics for the booth.

Jake has the North Welcome to Canyonville sign finished but has not received any bills yet.

The Lions Club Chili cook off BBQ booth went well. They made a little over 300.00. The Chamber is welcome to trade off every year if we want. Chamber declined.

Dean said the Elks Mixer went really well. Edie Cramer will try to do it next year. They are currently working on a can food drive for reservists. A motorcycle run on the 9th of August from Myrtle Creek to Galesville Res. The American Legion will be handing the food out.

The Pioneer Days Committee is still working on the TV raffle.With the drawing the last day of Pioneer Days. Please see Tamara if you would like to purchase tickets. 5.00/ticket or 5/20.00. A Concert featuring several bands will be in the Rays parking lot on July 18Th. They will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs. Katelyn Wiggs is organizing will be from 6-8pm.

Our City Wide Yard Sale is July 18Th from 8-4pm. Pam is submitting ads for the Paper and possibly Radio. Zack,Rick M, Joy, Tamara, and a few others have volunteered to help Javelin. You can still drop items with Pam at Bead Mecca.Breakfast and lunch will be served at Pioneer Park.

We have available spaces on the reader board at Rays.We would like to put on an extension on the Rays board for 8 new sign places. Javelin motioned Jake seconded.

Debbie from Forest Glen said we could hang a sign on her building for advertising if we want to.

the new superintendent from SUSD came to introduce himself and answer any questions. The new board
has been approved for the 09-10 school year.

The Pumpkin Fest is also doing a food drive.

Business of the month is Hometown Ins. The new sign should be up later today.

The button machine is on it's way. It comes with 50 buttons. We will need to order more. We also need graphics and an estimate for cost. Jake motioned to have 1000 buttons ordered and we will use them through out the year. Chuck seconded.

The Jail is coming along and should be ready soon for any events.

Forest Glen may have room for a food bank. They have a thrift shop open on Fri and Sat.

Web lists are being updated. If merchants haven't paid then they will be removed. Javelin will call those on the past due list to see if they are still interested.

Our booth for the 150 at the fairgrounds Sept 26Th - Mary Dell will bring produce, we will have the Jail and pictures of the local area from the past and present.

Jessica came by with ad offers from the News Review for the Chamber and local businesses. August 7Th would be print and send date. Jake motioned and Tamara seconded to do ad.

The press conference for the new hotel at Seven Feathers was this morning. There will now be 298 rooms, 12 suites, 2 convention rooms and a buffet style restaurant serving Mexican, Oriental, Italian, Mediterranean, and American. A Spa will also be opening sometime in July.

City Council has employed a late notice for water service of $10.00. If you notice street lights out please notify them. They have applied for a grant to pave 5th street.

The Lions Club have a BBQ stand at the Chili Cook Off at Seven Feathers this weekend. They will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs from 11am until the crowds thin out. The proceeds will go to benefit the sight and hearing fund.

Pioneer Days is still looking for more talent for the Talent Show. It is free to enter this year and you can pick up applications from Tamara at Hoff's. Donations are also being accepted to help pay for entertainment and use. They are holding a raffle for a 42" flat screen TV. Tickets go on sale Wednesday they are $5 each or 5 for 20. There is also preferred seating being offered this year. We are also needing pies to sell.

The North Welcome to Canyonville sign still needs the ditch filled in but is otherwise finished.

Kathy Brown is going to look into availability of the parent groups button machine. It will be about $250.00 to buy one. After all materials are purchased it will cost approx. 40 cents each. Jake Motioned to do two buttons, Tamara 2nd. One for before your arrested and one for after.

The County will be out to do the 500' sidewalk addition. They are trying to build the rest of the sidewalk into the budget.

A businessmens/womens mixer tonight at the Elks in myrtle creek at 6pm.

The Chamber will sponsor a $35.00 plaque for the Mens Single Horseshoe Competition at Pioneer days. Jake Motioned Tamara 2nd.

Pam Landell will be coming around with paperwork about getting more business for the downtown merchants. Madalynn needs information for the newsletter. You can email canyonvillechamber.org with anything you would like posted. Pam recently did Art in the Park with Riddle kids. She said it went well.
July 1st Lilley's Pad will be changing hands. Tina Jensen and Katey Seamons will be the new owners.
Pam also is wanting to open an Art Gallery in the empty area next to Bead Mecca. The South Umpqua Valley Art Gallery or SUVA would house local artists work for purchase. Hopefully be the end of July it will open. She still needs tape, texture and paint.

Grades K,1,2, 3/4 combo, 5 and 6 will be in Canyonville next year. The DLC was moved to Myrtle Creek. On the Schoolboard Jeannie Weekly and the new Superintendent will start in July.

Forrester's has new owners David and Shelly Klaas. They have also joined the Chamber. Please stop by and say hi.

A new store Just Essentials will be opening next to Lilleys Pad. They will be selling toilet paper, paper towels and other home essentials.

Boomer sent Rod Miller down to talk to Judy. They will make the Jail 8X8 and in 4 sections. It will be done by Pioneer Days. Chuck Mauldin will be the Sheriff. We will get a free spot at Pioneer Days for Jail if we give proceeds to the Stage Coverings. He has offered to print flyer's and posters for Pioneer days.

Pam will find out cost to make buttons/badges. She is thinking approx. 100-200 dollars.

We should ask the Parent Group to see if they have machine.

Pam L met with the County Commissioner today. they talked for 1 1/2 hrs about sidewalks in Canyonville. Pressing them to put sidewalks all the way to the cemetery. They may do a temporary black top path until they fix road 10yrs from now.

Tamara needs donations for Pioneer days. We still need to raise about 3000.

There is a fundraiser, raffling off a TV $5/ticket or 5 for 20.

The Visitors Guide for Canyonville was a full 2 pages this year and looks wonderful.
The Mainstreet meeting with the Commissioners has been rescheduled for June 11 at 10am room 217 at the Douglas County Courthouse. They are asking for show of support if you can make it. Please call Pam or Joanne with questions.

Rays is the business of the month.

The City Wide Yard Sale has been set for July 11th. Rick from the city has volunteered to help cook. Breakfast will be served from 8-11 and lunch from 11-2at Pioneer Park. Maps will be available to show where the yard sales are. To be included on the map there is a 5$ fee or you can donate items that will benefit the Chamber. Please drop all items off at Bead Mecca and have them organized and labeled. There will be press releases sent to the News Review and The Umpqua Free Press.

Myrtle Creek is hosting a Show and Shine on June 27 at Millsite Park. Parking will start at 9am for cars the show will be from 12-3 with entertainment and food booths available. This is usually included with the Summer Festival but they have seperated it this year.
There is a Businessmen/women's mixer being held at the Elks Lodge in Myrtle Creek on June 18th.

Susan was discussing a larger more efficient South County Resource Center. It is currently in Tri-city but they are running out of room to house all the different programs that are available. There are already plans from several years ago that would include several different City, County and State programs. She is going to try and meet with the City Council in the next few months to discuss this project and the funding that is available at this time.

Myrtle Creek Elks are asking for individual donations for there golf tournament held at the Myrtle Creek Golf Course.

There will be a DVD presentation of the Road Trip to Carnegie Hall. The trip the Riddle High School Band recently went on. The viewing will be June 3, 2009 @ 7:30pm. Free admission.

Application have been sent out for Pioneer Days booths. The Chamber would like to participate and Judy will start filling out the forms.

In June Douglas County Public Works will be installing drainage and sidewalks from the Horseless Carriage building to Canyon Market. About a 500 ft path.
Pam spoke with Susan Morgan about the sidewalk being paved all the way to the cemetery. There is a presentation to the commissioners on June 4th at 2:30pm. Letters of support are still being accepted along with the petitions that are going around. Anyone can sign.

Jeanie Weakley won the open South Umpqua School Board Position.
The School Board has decided to keep the 6th grade in Canyonville for the 09-10 school year.

The Bingo event held by the Lions at Pioneer Park on Sat went very well. They intend to be having more games in the future.

about 30 people volunteered on Saturday to clean up the city. They weeded, planted flowers and cleaned up from City Hall to Pioneer Park.

Tamara Hoff won the 150.00 Gas gift card raffle held by the Chamber.

The Erwin's have the power pole up for the Welcome to Canyonville sign at the north end of town. We hope to have the electrical up and everything working shortly.

2 scholarships of $500.00 will be awarded by the Chamber to South County Students. The winners will be announced next month.

The City Wide yard sale will be held July 18th. Javelin is organizing.

Dean will be coming around to ask for donations for the Elks scholarships and Golf event. They gave out 9 scholarships to Days Creek this year.
There will be a Flag Day Ceremony at the Elks Lodge on Sun June 14.
A mixer for business people will be at the Lodge June 18 at 6pm. The Elks would like the Chamber Pres. and Lions Club Pres. do be in attendance.

There will be a South County marketing training, by the Lacoda Group from Chicago, and is tentatively scheduled for the 18-19 of June. It will include town specific marketing for Canyonville, Riddle and Myrtle Creek. Once this is complete the Downtown Marketing Committee will apply for a grant under the UCDC economic development. It will help with marketing analysis for the 3 cities. It's for 17,000 and that will be matched by the UCDC. We would have to to volunteer hours as an in kind donation. It will help with determining needs in community. The next step would be to attract new businesses and activity in downtown areas. Helping with cosmetic improvements working in conjunction with the Historical Society.

As soon as Canyonville can come up with the materials cost for the Park seating cover they will begin construction. Some fund raising ideas were discussed.

Ideas are needed for the booth at the fairgrounds on June 26th for the 150.

The Pioneer days Committee needs donations to help with music. They have sent out forms to previous donors.

Kerry is holding the town swap/donation this sat at the Youth Center from 9-3pm.

There is a Chili dinner benefiting the 150th Birthday set for Oct 3rd.

The land has already been offered for the Circus next year. Canyonville Cigars and Ciggs has offered to let us sell tickets for the circus in front of there establishment.

The Circus went very well. We are receiving a lot of positive feedback with plans to hold it again next year. The chamber made 240.00 off of pres-old tickets, with an additional 98 tickets sold at the gate. Along with a lot of fun, local business also reported having a boost in sales.

The Downtown Assoc. has a meeting tonight at 7pm at Ken's. They will be discussing the sidewalk between here and the Casino. Please let Pam or Colleen know if you have letters of support.

The ballot box will be at City Hall until 8pm on Tues.
The City wide Clean up is this Saturday the 16th from 9-12 and 1-4. Lunch and entertainment will be provided for volunteers at Pioneer Park from 12-1. Meet at City Hall at 9am.

The Lions Club will host Bingo at Pioneer Park on May 16th from 1-3.

The Chamber of Commerce will host the City Wide yard sale this year. It will be the second weekend of July. There will be a breakfast and lunch fundraiser. Tables are 5.00.

There will be a Chili Dinner for the Oregon 150 on Oct 3rd either at Pioneer Park or the Masonic Lodge depending on weather.

Days Creek High school is hosting there annual Alumni Softball game. Sunday May 17th at 2pm admission is 1.00 with a dinner fundraiser following at 4:30. BBQ Salmon, Chicken and hamburgers will be served this year. Dinner starts at 5.00/adults 4.00/kids age k-12 and 3.00/4 and under. They will be auctioning off 2 sweatshirts and all proceeds go to the girls softball team.

The Pioneer Day Committee has paid the booking fee. They will soon get letters out requesting donations. Doug is measuring for seating. They are discussing different fundraising or raffle ideas.

The month of May and June are busy for the local schools. The softball field is now usable for the 10 and under group. The Fire dept is letting grades 1-4 try the fire hose. Grades 4,5,and 6 will soon have there outdoor trips. The kindergarten will be coming around visiting local businesses and June 2nd is the year end movie. CA Theaters provided a 75% disc. This year to rent the theater if the children would be allowed in advertising. They have laid off one teacher and are blending the 3/4 grades for the 2010 school year.

May 23rd is the Community Giveaway at the Youth Center From 9-3. And will be held the 4th Sat of June and July. Contact Kerry at Ray's with questions.

The YMCA Free Lunch Program is going to be held this year. Starting on June 29-Aug 13 Mon-Thurs from 12-1. All children are welcome. Myrtle Creek and Riddle will also be participating.
The Canyonville Library is also planning some fun activities for children see Carol at the Library with questions.

June 14th there will be a Flag Day Ceremony done by the Boyscouts at the Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge and Millsite Park. Sara Linton will be reading her winning essay about what the flag means to her.
June 18th Businessmen's/women's mixer at 6pm at the Elks Lodge 10.00/plate. Dean would like the Chamber and Lions Club Presidents to attend.
Dean will be coming around to get donations for the scholarship program. They gave out 10 scholarships this year 9 to days creek.
Sunday August 9th at 11am there is a Motorcycle Food Drive from Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge to Galesville. The food will go to reservists families who are in need of help. It is joint project between the Grants Pass and Myrtle Creek Elks. There will also be a bike bashing held at 1.00/hit.

Judy updated everyone about the Circus on May 13th. The Clown was here yesterday and went to local businesses and schools. There will be an add in the News Review on May 8th. Seven Feathers will provide a free bus service from City Hall to the circus starting at 4pm and finishing when the circus is over. Seven Feathers purchased and gave out tickets to 152 families and took care of manicuring the field. Cheryl volunteered to call and have utilities located to prevent damage when putting up big top. All the money has been collected from pre-sold tickets totalling over $1100.00. All other monies and tickets need to be returned to Katie Siegel at Canyonville Chiropractic by 12pm on Monday May11th. Our Guest Ringmaster is Doug Sales.

The cover for the bleachers at Pioneer Park has been designed and may start construction soon.

There will be a Chili dinner project for the Oregon 150 on Oct 3rd.

Pam Landell resigned as Secretary of the Chamber effective today 05-07-09. She thanked everyone and we appreciated her work with the chamber. Jenny Gilbert is to replace Pam as secretary. Javelin Motioned to have Jenny replace Pam on the Board of the Chamber and seconded by Brian Shankle.

Pam also informed us of needing to renew the PO Box and the Myrtle Creek Chamber membership.
There will be a meeting tonight at 7pmat Ken's for the Main Street Program and the Bicycle/Pedestrian path. The Group would appreciate any letters of support from businesses and private citizens. The Chamber has already submitted their Letter. Please drop off with Pam or Colleen Deaton.

Lilley's Pad Children's Boutique is now open downtown Tues-Sat 10-4pm. They offer educational toys and clothing.

The Feedlot has been leased. Marla Bates is opening a Restaurant/Gift Shop for Break, Lunch and dinner and should be open in July.

The kids have a "drive in" movie at the YMCA. Please call the Y with questions.
The AOA trips for this summer have been scheduled. Table Rick hike is May 15.
There will be a car wash during the city wide clean up on the 16th. Money is to help the South County YMCA.

Cheryl notified us about about the Canyonville clean up May 16th from 9-12 and 1-3. There is a ballot box drop off at city hall.

Doug said the Lions Club will have Bingo at Pioneer Park on May 16th from 1-3.

Brian let us know about the Special Olympics. They raised $35,000. He has raffle tickets benefiting the Square Dance Group. The Chamber still has tickets for sale.

Travis Fuller and Cody O'Sullivan from the Days Creek School talked about the fundraiser for the entry of the school. They are selling engraved bricks that are $50.00 each and will have up to 3 lines of script, available in a variety of fonts. So far they have sold 100 bricks, but would like to sell 1000. The kids are doing all the work. If you would like more info contact Mark Hopfer 825-3296.

Days Creek will have 30 graduating Seniors this year.

Javelin talked about the Umpqua Training and Employment summer work program that gives hands on training and mentorship to youth with a cost benefit to the employer. They have openings and funding. The YMCA had a succesful Healthy Kid's day. They were impressed with the turn-out of complete family units. The Get Fit Challenge ends this Friday. There is an awards ceremony this Friday evening at the Y.

The Canyonville Schools Parent Group is selling tickets to the dinner and a movie event that is on Friday May 8th. Tickets are $20 and include dinner, dessert and the movie. There will also be a raffle for a 26" flat screen TV. for tickets or more info call 839-6966

Jim reported that there is $500 dollars in the Chamber scholarship fund and $5000 in the Harry Burdge scholarship fund.

The circus pre-sold $1300 in circus tickets and that means that all sales from here on out are profits for the chamber. There were 52 tickets that we donated to the Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt.Circus posters and tickets should arrive soon.

Chuck announced that the Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt. that will be this Saturday at 1:00 at pioneer park. There will be different age group categories to make it fair for the little ones. He also wanted to congratulate Tamara Hoff for being the Woman of the Year at Saturdays Citizen of the Year Banquet.

Pam announced the Main Street meeting that will be Thursday April 16th at 7:00 at Ken's Sidewalk Cafe. She asked for a letter of support from the chamber to have when approaching the County Commissioners. Javelin spoke with Susan Morgan who supports the Bicycle/Pedestrian path plans. The Main Street Association will ask for the support of the city at the council meeting on the 20th.

The Oregon Main Street Program will be holding a 2 day workshop April 20-21 on the main street program that is open to everyone and is free of charge. It will be held at Jasmine's on South East Main Street in Downtown. If you are interested contact Pam at 839-6688. You are welcome to attend all or part of the workshop, so come show your support and learn about how the Main Street program can help Canyonville.

The Mad Hatter Tea Party will be Sunday March 29th at the Pioneer Indian Museum. Tickets are $20.00 and will benefit the South Douglas County Heritage Tourism. They are earmarked for freeway signs, which will directly benefit all businesses and the community.

Dean talked about the Umpqua Community Development Corp. program that helps low income families build houses. The program is similar to the Habitat for Humanity program that requires sweat equity involvement. He suggested that we have them come down and do a presentation for the program.

The Elks is planning a South County business mixer for May or June. They hope to involve businesses from Canyonville, Myrtle Creek and Riddle. The idea is that if we know what businesses are in our communities we will all grow through referrals. Networking is crucial to growth and success.

Tamara talked about the schedule of meetings for Pioneer Days. All meeting's will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at Creekside Restaurant in the back room. August meetings will be held at Pioneer Park.

Jim suggested we send a thank you card and a plant to Debbie Bixby at Canyon Tax for saving us $150 by referring us to the website for filing important non profit tax forms. The cut-off is $25,000. and we fell under that, therefore qualified to self file. Judy will take care of the purchase and delivery.

The YMCA advisory board will meet tonight. The board is made up of community members, YMCA board members and city council members. The goal is to assess the needs of the community and make sure the Y is fulfilling their obligation to the Canyonville community needs. They are also continuing with their scholarship drive. for more info contact the Y at 839-6117.

Pam talked about the Main Street program that is moving forward. The representatives from the Oregon Main Street will be in Canyonville to assess the needs of the community. There will be a town hall meeting on March 17th to introduce the community to the program and get feedback from the people who live here. Donna from the Leisure Inn introduced the new manager Genevieve, who will be taking over next week as Donna is retiring.

Brian talked about the Special Olympics Walkathon that will be May 2nd. He will be coming around to solicit sponsorship. He also wanted to remind you that he has tickets for the citizen of the year banquet on April 4th.

Jim talked about the outcome of the Days Creek School Board meeting regarding merging Canyonville with Day's Creek. The board voted it down 4-3.

Judy opened the meeting

She talked about the progress of the circus which will be on May 13th. The contract is signed and the show will be on the Cofelt (???) property near Herbert's Pond that is owned by the tribe. Judy is meeting with the tribal attorneys regarding water and mowing the property.

Autumn from Gordon's Pharmacy talked about the need for a shelter for the bleachers at Pioneer Park. She will be getting an estimate for a permanent shelter that will have enough pitch to shade the stage area for the performers. The money raised during the circus will help fund the project.

Madalyn talked about the Geo Tourism map that will be produced by National Geographic. It covers Washington and Oregon from Tacoma to Ashland. They are looking for 150 sites for the map and 300 sites for the website. Please consider putting in an enthusiastic nomination for something you love in this area. This is a great opportunity toget the South Umqua Valley on the map, which will help with tourism.

Tim gave a report on the Canyonville School. He talked about the school talent show coming up. He and Misty were at the school board meeting fighting to keep the 6th grade in Canyonville. They showed that of the 23 5th graders, 18 want to stay in Canyonville. The Lions club distrubuted flags to 1st graders. The coffee pot broke. Rick Richardson will help locate a commercial grade coffee pot to keep teachers happy. 25 tiger cards were issued. Average grade for 5th graders was an A+ in state tests. No wonder we're not smarter than a 5th grader.

Jim gave a report about the Schools Committee boundary change. The Days Creek board tied with a vote 3/3. The committee will continue to meet with Days Creek. He also mentioned that they need a Canyonville representative for budget committee school board opening.

Javelin talked about the YMCA scholarship fund drive. The goal is "Never say no to any kid!"

Sweetheart Stroll got positive feedback. There were 46 maps turned in and it was well received with merchants as well as the public. Pam distributed evaluations to the participating merchants. It was suggested that we add balloons.

At the City Council meeting ODOT talked of their plans to start paving I-5 from Glendale to mile 133. Now taking bids. Closing the exit by bill's towing 3 days. The job will start in June.

Historical Society will be holding their Annual Tea. The theme this year is Mad Hatters Tea!

Judy and Ted talked about the National Geographic Geo Tourism map that will be coming out in the summer. They are seeking nominations for geographical natural and historic landmarks in the South Umpqua region. The map will be beautifully done and will have a driving tour of the area from Crater Lake to Mt Rainier. If there is something in this area that is a not to be missed sight for tourists than we want to know about it. Some mentions were the falls, bridges, museum, pioneer families, 3rd oldest city. So tell us your pick and what you love about it, be descriptive, as passion for your area is important to the selection process. The deadline is in March. Contact Judy for more info.

Ted Ramos talked about the South County Task Force for the Workforce Training and Development Center that will be located in the area. They are currently in the location selection process and are looking for land to build a facility. One possibility is the Tri City Industrial Park at exit 103. The next meeting is on the 23rd. This Sunday 2/8 there will be a South County Tourism meeting from 2-4 at the Creekside to discuss the signs on the freeway. The meeting will be in the back meeting room.

Jim brought up a couple of bills that needed to be paid, Judy said pay them.

Donna from the Leisure Inn mentioned that she will be retiring in just 5 weeks and wants to complete the books for the rooms by the middle of March. If you have your flyers ready leave them at the front desk. If you need help Madalyn has a special to do the graphic design and printing for just $40. You can reach her at 680-4358.

Brian has tickets available for the Citizen of the year banquet which will be in April. Tickets are limited to 200 and are $30.00 each. Brian can be contacted through Jake's Auto Center. He also has raffle tickets for a gas card and is selling tickets for a church missionary fundraiser.

Shauna from the YMCA wanted to let you know about the Father/Daughter Mother/Son Valentines dance on Feb 12th at 7pm. For more info call the Y at 839-6117. She also mentioned the Strong kids campaign a that will help the south county Y directly.

Umpqua bank is sponsoring a get fit contest that starts this week and runs for 10 weeks. This Friday 2/6 is the last day to register. With the current number of participants the winner stands to take over $1800 dollars. Count me in!

The Tiller school has produced a cookbook to raise money for the 6th & 7th grade class to go to Washington DC. The cookbooks are available through Promise Natural Foods.

There are 4 openings for the South Umpqua School Board. Canyonville needs representaion.

The Elks will be having a Sweetheart Ball on Valentines Day. There will be a great band and there is a $5.00 cover charge.

The Canyonville Downtown Association will have their Sweetheart Stroll on Valentines Day from 11-4. Maps will be available at the Chamber visitor center next week. Strollers will enjoy chocolate tastings at participating shops and get their map stamped. Those who turn in their map will be eligible for a drawing of a sweetheart gift basket. The Oregon Main Street Program will be doing a community needs assessment in March. More detils will be forthcoming at the next meeting.

The Oregon 150 requests that everyone decorate with white and green balloons on Feb 14th to recognize the birth of the state.

The Spaghetti feed money totaled over 17,000 dollars and will be given to communities through $500 grants. They are looking for communities that participated and have needs to apply.

Doug has secured the reservation of the Ice Cream cooler for the Root Beer Floats at the event that preceeds Pioneer Days.

Judy mentioned that Clay Potential will be closing it's doors and therefore will not be making the Chamber Pot for the battle of the Chambers.

Judy wants to coordinate events with the Pioneer Days to help raise funds and have fun the Saturday, August 22nd, prior to the Pioneer days event which is scheduled for the 27th-29th. She suggested continuing the battle of the chambers and adding a dutch oven cooking contest and serving food. Javelin suggested root beer floats and iced coffee.

The Riddle Chamber of Commerce wants to invite you to a Business after hours open house that will be held at Sterling Bank in Riddle on January 20th from 5:00-6:30. Refreshments will be served.

There will be an Oregon 150 celebration at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, September 26th. We have been asked if we would like a free booth to represent Canyonville. After some discussion we decided to take a 10x20 booth that would allow us to display history and current info on the community and it's businesses. Plan to make up a display for your business. Ideas for the booth are popcorn, Cookies, historical pictures, demos of how businesses and products were in the pioneer days. This display should entice people to come and visit Canyonville.

Dean reminded us the Chinese New Year's Celebration that will be next week and is sponsored by the Elks. They will have a 3 piece country and western band called the Dixonville Chicks and food by Roger Wong. Tickets are $20.00 each or $100 for 6. He also mentioned that while traveling on an airplane he struck up a conversation with a womon who asked where he was from and when he told her Canyonville she said she remembered Canyonville as having one of the neatest natural foods stores around. Congrats to Javelin!

Jim reported on the progress of the schools committee. Day's Creek school district will meet January 21st to discuss boundary changes. They will meet in the computer room. They are trying to get as much community input as possible, so try to attend if you can. Also, Judy reminded us of several openings on the South Umpqua school board.

Bob Deaton received a letter from the 36Edistrict Lions club who will be holding a meeting at the casino March 26th-28th. They are seeking info on the area for their members and he suggested we write a welcome letter to invite them to explore the town.

Lily Brislen spoke about the Think Local Program. She handed out applications to join and let us know that they have a sliding scale for new and struggling businesses. You can contact Lily at the Umpqua CDC 673-4909

Judy opened the meeting as the new 2009 president. She announced that there were several deaths in the past few weeks, including George Shaffer.

2009 Membership Dues are now due. We will be sending applications with the newsletter to save on postage and to invite other business owners to join.

We will be renewing our membership to the Riddle and Myrtle Creek Chambers and are awaiting their bills.

We need to raise money by June 1st to qualify for the matching funds on the Lilja grant to complete the sign. Rick and Raymond from the fire department have agreed to keep the pond filled. The electricity is still at the mercy of the land owners, Lillian and Darryl.

The Christmas lights have been taken down.

There have been more incidents of vandalism to the lights at the park and to local businesses, including Hoff's Frontier Real Estate. Doug from Ken's witnessed some of the destruction and called the police, who caught the perpetrators. Tamara did not press charges, but made them pay for the damages and apologize.

Jenny from Umpqua bank announced the Business after hours open house that will be held at Sterling Bank in Riddle on January 20th from 5:00-6:30. Refreshments will be served.

Tim from Canyonville Elementary School announced that they will be holding a pop can drive. The proceeds will pay for a 3 day trip to the coast this spring.
He also reported of vandalism and break-ins at the school. Cans were stolen from a storage facility and students were caught after Ralph Johansen observed the students with large garbage bags and realized they were up ton mischief. In a separate incident fire extinguishers were discharged and fire retardant was sprayed throughout a room.

Enrollment at the elementary school is at 146 students for the 2nd quarter. Tiger cards will be issued on Feb 2nd or 3rd.

There will be a school board meeting on Wednesday, January 14th. They are searching for a new superintendent. There will be an 18 person panel making the selection.

Tuesday, Jan 13th will be a celebration of literacy from 12:15-1:00 at 7 feathers convention center. Cookies will be served.

The Elks gave out 167 food baskets at Christmas, which included over 10,000 items. They will be holding a Chinese New Year's Celebration that will have a 3 piece country and western band. Tickets are $20.00 each or $100 for 6.

January 14th is the South Umpqua Hoop Shoot for kids 8-13 years old. Doors open at noon, shooting starts at 1:00pm.

The Marketing Workshop, 7 Steps to Effective Marketing, will be this Wednesday, January 14th at City Hall. The cost is $20.00 and is open to everyone. Contact Joanne Gordon for info. 839-6067

Day's Creek school district will meet January 21st to discuss boundary changes. They will meet in the computer room.

Shanna from the YMCA reported that they have sent out their new schedule of events. She also mentioned the Y has a new CEO who will be spending some time observing the South County Facility. They will be fund raising for the scholarship program and would like your support. The needs are high due to the slowdown in the economy. The programs are dependent on attendance and if there is not enough enrollment they will have to cancel programs and turn away students in need, but with community support they can keep the numbers up and the kid's involved in a positive activity.

Brian will be coming around to sell tickets for the latest Gas Card Raffle valued at $150.00

Judy is planning another fund raiser to raffle a couple of Easter baskets. Easter is on April 12th. If you have items to include contact Judy in the floral department at Ray's.

Try to change your Christmas Flags to Spring flags by the end of the month. Commonwealth Garden Shoppe have a few left if you still need one.

Vandalism is a problem in the downtown and at the park. Vandals knocked over the light display at Pioneer Park. Jake fixed it, but the supports are weakened.

The lights at the park are blowing breakers, The cause is unknown. We need to start planning for the purchase of bulbs for next year as the price is 25% off if they are purchased in March. We will need 2600 more to complete all the lights. About 1300 for the park and the rest on the ornaments.

Madalyn gave a report on the newsletter, which will run monthly. Ads are available for an affordable cost, starting at just $8.00 per month. The circulation is about 150 businesses. She needs all ads, event and article submissions by the third Friday of the month. You can reach Madalyn via email at newsletter@canyonvillechamber.org.

The News Review wanted feedback on the Canyonville page that came out in the Shopper on November 30th. Most people had not seen them, so she will bring tear sheets by. If you would like to submit your event or advertise contact Jessica via email at jcarleton@nrtoday.com. The deadline is in a couple of weeks.

The new Sign board is up at Ray's and looks great. We will replace the signs at City Hall this summer, as they are starting to look faded also.

The new community health clinic will be opening on January 7th. They will be holding an opening ceremony and open house that day.

The marketing workshop is scheduled for the 14th of January from 6:30-8:30pm. The cost is $20.00 and you can pre-register with Joanne at Commonwealth Garden Shoppe.

Doug reported on the Canyonville Downtown Holiday Celebration that was this past Saturday. The event seemed to be successful even though it was the first year and was put together last minute. He learned a lot and will start organizing next year's event in June.

The Library is hosting a Children's Party this evening.

The School district is facing severe budget cuts this year and this is having an impact on the progress of the Schools Committee getting the schools back. They met with the Days Creek school district last night and they are working on getting public opinion to see if the want to move forward. The Schools committee encourages you to fill out the survey and place it in the drop box. Locations are Gordon's Pharmacy, Umpqua Bank and City Hall.

Debra from Forest Glen Retirement Home wants to announce upcoming events in which the public is invited. They will have goodies and hot cider on Christmas Eve from 1-4. There will be a New Year's Eve Ball on the 31st at 7:00 pm. This will be a formal event with sparkling cider. She is also planning and event for January 23rd to celebrate the Oregon 150. Many of the residents have a rich history and would like to share their stories.

The Oregon 150 meets at the Cow Creek Tribal Office in Roseburg on the third Thursday at 1:00. Cookbooks are available at City Hall, the museum and the casino gift shop. Proceeds stay in Douglas County.

The Lion's Club will be assembling there Christmas baskets on the 19th at 6:30 and need your help. Please show up at the youth center for this worthy cause.

The next meeting will be at the Ken's Sidewalk Cafe on Jan. 8th. That will be the first meeting of the year.

ODOT has approved the plant selection for the welcome sign near Forest Glen. The chamber agreed to pay $83.00 to Commonwealth for purchasing costs.

Jake gave an update on the water and power for the sign on the North End of town. He has been brainstorming with Day and Night Electric, PP&L and the property owners to come up with an affordable solution to the problem. Here is a rundown on the latest plan: The water will be provided by the Canyonville Fire Dept. which will fill it from the truck and refill as needed. The power will be provided by investing in a customer owned meter and reimbursing Raymonds mom for the actual usage. If the property sells the power arrangement will carry over to the new owner. Raymond's mom has not yet agreed, but is considering it.

The Christmas stocking was not ordered, so that fund-raiser will have to wait until next year.

The Canyonville Downtown Association will have it's first annual Holiday Celebration on Friday, Dec. 5th from 5-7pm. There will be a Frontier Santa, Tree Lighting and many merchants will stay open late.

The Canyonville Library will have a children's Story time on December 11th at 5:30. Elves will be present!

The Glenbrook Christmas Fair is this Friday and Saturday in Riddle.

Ad space is available in the Chamber Newsletter that will be mailed out in January. The size and price will be available at the next meeting. The money will go to cover the cost of printing and mailing.

The School Committee requests your participation in returning the surveys that were sent earlier in the week. They would like to have your input by the end of next week. There is a drop box at Umpqua Bank, Gordon's Pharmacy or City Hall.

The Lights in the park will be put up this Saturday at 8:00am. Please try to help, show up on the North end of the park at 8:00am.

The next meeting will be at the Creekside. That will be the last meeting of the year.

The Christmas lights will be installed tomorrow morning. Jake, Chuck, Joy, Brian and Pam will meet at Jake's today at 3:00 to help with set-up. Javelins son Tanner will join us after school.

There was a miscalculation with the light bulbs and we will need $1300 to complete the lights. This will be postponed till next season. In the meantime some of the decorations will have mixed bulbs.

The lights will be put up in Pioneer Park on Sat. Dec 6th. If you can help contact Jake (839-4125) for details.

The Boy Scouts have 4 flags left in the holiday flag program. To have a flag in front of your business the cost is $25.00 per year and they will hang the flag at your business on national holidays.

Bruce from Commonwealth Garden Shoppe is still working on the solar electricity. We should be able to conceal the solar panel in the water barrel.

Pam talked about the Downtown Holiday Celebration that will be on December 5th and is sponsored by the Canyonville Downtown Association. Doug Sales (Ken's Sidewalk Cafe') will be coordinating the tree and donations are needed to help offset the cost of the tree and lights. There will be many events happening starting with the lighting of the tree on the corner of Main and Second at Umpqua Bank.

Jenny from Umpqua bank talked about their Wish Upon a Star program. They are looking for nominations of people in the area that are deserving of having a special holiday wish come true. If you know of someone who needs a little help this holiday season write a letter nominating them and why. Nominations will be accepted through 12/12 and wishes will be granted from the 8th-19th.

Coats for Kids campaign is starting. Drop off sites are the Canyonville Library and Umpqua Bank. They are seeking new and gently worn coats in all sizes to help low income families in the community.

Cheryl announced that the Oregon 150 Cookbooks are available at City Hall for $10.00. The money raised goes to the events planned for the Oregon 150 celebrations that will take place in 2009. We are still waiting to hear if there will be banners made for the Oregon 150, which will be hung throughout the year in 2009.

The Park Board meeting has been postponed. They will be rescheduling to discuss the fundraising for a shelter for the park.

Javelin reported that all but two of the signs are completed for the new community board at Ray's. He will talk to Pam Young to find out who has paid and if there are any spaces available due to non-payment. There is a waiting list for openings on that board.

The Christmas lights are in and paid for. Rod wants to hang them the week before Thanksgiving. A work party will be held at City Hall on Sat, Nov 15th at 8:00 am with a break for lunch.

PP&L has all the pole #s and will get started soon. The electricity to the sign is not looking good at this time. It may be more expensive than expected. Two new poles and one transformer will cost about $10,000 and we would have to get a permit. Joanne will look into the cost of a solar panel to run the 220 1.5HP pump. Judy suggested that someone research grants for green power.

PP&L is resisting hanging banners over the street

Tamara Volunteered her husband Steve & their equipment to dig the ditch for the power line and water. Mike Morris has already offered to do that.

The Lion's Club is seeking donations for the Christmas Baskets. The Chamber agreed to give $500.

The Giant stocking Raffle will be a fundraiser again this year. We agreed to purchase the deluxe stocking for $201. Ray's will let us set up a table out front to sell tickets.

Joanne will be working with the native plants for the lanscape of the sign. Bob suggested we talk to ODOT about possible plant restrictions.

Halloween - The haunted house was a huge success and Jim wants to recognize all the work that Bill and his crew put into the event. Great Job!

Brian announced the raffles of a 25 lb Turkey or a $25.00 gift Certificate. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.00.

Jessica from the News Review talked about a special advertising opportunity. Rates start at $27 and the ads are in full color. The ad will come out the last Tuesday of each month in the Umpqua Shopper and it will be promoted through the News Review with a contest that will direct people to seek it out.

There will be a Christmas tree lighting at the Umpqua Bank street corner on December 5th. Many Businesses will stay open till 7:00 that evening to encourage holiday shopping.

Thank you, Misty for responding to my meeting reminder email. It is reassuring to know someone is reading these.

Misty announced through her email that Canyonville Ace will start having Senior Day on Thursdays. Contact her for more information. Also Friday, Nov. 14 there will be a Sock Hop at Canyonville School with carnival games in the gym from 6-9.

Gordon's Pharmacy was chosen for November Business of the month. Other businesses with ballots were: Morin Glory and Cyber Cafe. It was a difficult decision as each of the ballots contained glowing praises of each of these businesses. Therefore, Mori'n Glory will be the business of the month for December and Cyber Cafe will receive the honer in January. Madalyn will interview the businesses and do a press release.

Ballots will be handed out at the January Chamber meeting to encourage more voting.

Reminder: ballot boxes are located at Ray's, the Post Office and City Hall.

Discussion of low cost advertising posibilities: Create attractive posters and display them in prominent restrooms. Display same posters at Kiosk at city hall. Perhaps do a town wide poster. Further discussion needed on these creations. Pursue placing advertising in the 7Feathers shuttle buses.

Downtown Holiday Celebration! Friday, December 5 we hope to light a Christmas Tree on the corner in front of Umpqua Bank. Several music & choir groups will be invited to entertain the public at different locations downtown. All businesses are encouraged to stay open til 7:00 p.m., serve refreshments and offer some sort of attraction to draw people to our wonderful town. Madalyn will prepare a flier to be distributed to all businesses. Hope you can all join in on the fun.................

Anne Preciado-Rich from UCC spoke about the South County Task Force for a community training and education facility in this area. There will be a public meeting on November 18th from 4-8. The meeting location is tentatively scheduled for Seven Feathers. Invitations will be sent once the location is confirmed. She also brought up the oportunities for teaching classes through the UCC Community Education program and would like anyone with a passion for something to contact her, no teaching experience is required. Javelin will be teaching a class this January on cooking with natural and whole foods.

There will be a workshop on marketing your business (on a shoestring budget) at UCC November 5th from 11-3. for info contact Jill with the Oregon Festival and Events Association at 866-451-6332 or by email info@oregonfestivals.org the fee is $35.00 and includes lunch.

Good news on the PP&L front. Tim Freeman oiled the squeaky wheel and we're starting to roll. The Power to the signs and the power poles are now on the agenda, but will be done as time allows. The holiday lights will be hung even if the conversion has not been completed yet, but we are hopeful that it will be done. The sign may take some additional time, as approval from Salem is needed.

The Halloween ad will be coming out soon, the chamber will run the same ad, but change the trick or treat hours toend at 6:30. You may be offered an advertising opportunity. The Canyonville School will be holding a candy drive again this year.

The Canyonvillle Schools Committee will be sponsoring a haunted house from noon till midnight at the old drug house next to Oregon Sunshine, 310 Main St. Bill Burkhert from Techtron will be setting it up and the cost is $3.00 for adults, $5.00 for couples, $1.00 for kids over 10 and free for kids under 10. It was said that once you go in you will never come out the same.

Patti talked about the progress for the Pumpkin Festival that will be this Saturday. LeRoy Bell will be featured on todays Currents section in the News Review and the special section insert will also be in todays paper. She still needs items for the car show goody bags. Contact Jake at 839-4125 and he will arrange to have your donation picked up.

The Chamber (Jake) will choose the Sponsors Choice (Best of Show) winner at the Car Show.

Patti requests that all Booths be set up by 9:00am, so there is no conflict with the car show or Giant Pumpkins.

All businesses should have there decorations completed by 1:00 for the business display contest.

The Canyonvillle Schools Committee will be selling Cookie Lee Jewelry at their booth as a fund raiser. It will be cash and carry or by order if they run out of an item you desire.

Bunco was successful. The winners were Nancy Hamilton, Jim Thomas and Joy Curtiss.

Joanne and Pam spoke about the AMIBA workshop that was held at UCC on Tuesday. AMIBA is the American Independant Business Alliance, which helps communities develop a stronger local economy through community education and support for independant businesses. The Umpqua Community Development Corp.(UCDC) has partnered with AMIBA to bring the program to Douglas County.

The Downtown Association is holding a canned foods drive that will kick-off at the Pumpkin Festival. It will continue through Nov 15th and there will be drop off sites throughout Canyonville and Riddle. Please consider buying an extra can of food while at Ray's and drop it in the box on the way out. The needs are high this year and donations are down. Thanks!

The Square Dance group is selling raffle tickets for a Turkey or a $25.00 gift certificate. The tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Brian will be coming around soliciting your donation.

Javelin is working with Penny to get the signs made for the community bulletin boards.

October 15th is the YMCA's 10th birthday party and the community is invited. The festivities will be from 11-2, so come and show your support. Also the Y is seeking a new director. Shanna announced that new members who join this month will receive 50% off the enrollment fee.

Jake is still trying to connect with PP&L about the power to the sign and the pole conversion. Tim Freeman offered to assist, as he has a connection there. The Bulbs that were ordered for the Christmas lights were the wrong ones and have been returned, the new and correct bulbs should arrive soon, but the delay will make it more challenging to get them installed. There will be a couple of work parties scheduled to help with that. The donation cans have been distributed and we are making up some more as we get cans. They will go out next week.

Pumpkin flags are still available and are a great way to show some unity downtown, see Joanne at Commonwealth Garden Shoppe. If you have not yet put yours out please do so.

The Balloon Festival is this Saturday in Myrtle Creek. Join them for a pancake breakfast, balloon rides, arts & crafts and demonstrations. The Festival opens at 7:00am and continues throughout the day with a free shuttle to the Riddle Harvest Festival.

Dennis Douglas spoke to introduce himself as a candidate for city council.

The Canyonville Downtown Association will be collecting food through a food drive that will benefit the Lions Club holiday food baskets and the Riddle food bank. The Food Drive will begin October 15th and run through the 15th of November. Containers will be placed throughout Canyonville and Riddle and at the Canyonville Pumpkin Festival. Please give generously, as higher prices in energy and fuel have created increased demand for local families.

Joanne attended a South County Task Force meeting to address the need of a Douglas County Workforce and Education Center in South Douglas County. The meeting was at the Grand Victorian in Myrtle Creek and was presented by UCC. Some of the information centered around the winery trade that would be prime in this area for job development and economic growth. Joan from the City also attended. There will be another meeting with the task force and then the public will be invited.

Tim Freeman will be donating another $50.00 toward a gas card fund-raiser. Tickets will be sold and the money raised will go to the matching funds for the grant for the signs. Tim also wanted to remind everyone of the importance of voting. It is easy and makes a difference.

Judy still has tickets available for Bunco at El Paraiso this Monday. All proceeds will go to bring tourism to South County, which helps all businesses.

Commonwealth Garden Shoppe is the Business of the Month for October.

Javelin inquired if anyone knew when the bridge will be re-opened. It was scheduled for completion in early 2009, but we are hopeful it will open early, as they have recently paved.

Halloween is Friday October 31st. The Downtown Trick or Treat will end at 6:30 this year. The Chamber will have a Halloween Display Contest, not to be confused with the Pumpkin Festival Display Contest. The winner of the contest will get their name engraved on a Gold Pan that will be added to each year. Mary's Garden is planning a corn maze event.

Serena spoke about the SMART reading program that is offered to Kindergarten and First grade students at the Canyonville elementary school. They are looking for volunteers to read with the kids. Tim Larkin added that this is an opportunity to facilitate a partnership with the community and the school. Susan Morgan and the Oregon Legislature support the program and Susan talked about the benefits and the positive impact the program has made in the lives of the kids and their success in the future. She also commented that for some families this is their only access to age appropriate books. The program runs October through May. The latest gas card fund raiser raised 543.14 that will be given to the Riddle Band. The winner of the gas card was Jake from Jake's Auto Center.

Tamara will be holding a special meeting for those who have volunteered to help work in the food booth at the Pumpkin Festival. The meeting will be at noon at El Paraiso on Wednesday, October 8th.

Tim Larkin spoke about the Tiger Program at the elementary school. This program partners with the businesse to reward kids that have perfect attendance. This is the 20th year they have offered this program and they needed one spot to be filled. Judy Coleman asked to have the flower shop at Ray's fill the spot. The cards will be issued Nov. 12th, Feb. 4th, April 15th and June 9th. The kids must follow rules of conduct while requesting their reward and if they are disrespectful the business has the right to confiscate the card and turn it over to the principal.
The Parent reading night is on the 23rd. The 6th grade made over $200 on their car wash, thanks to the Canyon Market for use of their parking lot.

Lily Brislen from the Umpqua Community Development Center spoke about the Amiba program. This is the American Independant Business Alliance. They will be holding a workshop on the 13th and 14th. Jim Siegal spoke about the Canyonvill Schools Comittee progress and the exciting possibility of Canyonville partnering with Days Creek to offer a better educational experience to the K-8 kids. There will be a fund raising booth at the Pumpkin Festival featuring Cookie Lee Jewelry.

Judy mentioned the spaghetti dinner raised over $600 towards the Canyonville 150 celebration.

The Rodeo was well attended even though it seemed slow at times and the food booth was successful. The gross sales were $2221.31. Net total to be determined once all expenses are recorded.

The gas ticket fund raiser is going well. Tickets were sold at the rodeo and raised about $100. Brian still has tickets available, contact Brian at Jakes Auto Center.

PP&L has a new contact that may help expedite the process of installation of the power to the sign and the poles. Jake will follow up on that lead.

The LED lights have arrived. Brian at Seven Feathers will check in the order to make sure it is accurate. There are sponsorships for the lights at $100 each. The donation cans will be distributed next week to participating businesses . If you would like to help raise funds for the Christmas lights contact Pam @ 839-6688 and she will get you a donation can.

Judy is selling tickets for the Bunco event that will be at El Paraiso on October 13th. The tickets are $25.00 each and the money will be split between the Museum and the Tourism group. Jake will be attending. Contact Judy at Ray's market.

The Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser for the Oregon 150th birthday is September 27th at the Masonic Lodge. The labor will be shared with the Riddle Chamber of Commerce. Thanks Riddle!

The Riddle Chamber is patiently waiting for there trophy for winning the Battle of the Chambers.

Pam reminded everyone that the coupons or small gifts are needed by the end of September for the welcome bags that will go to all new businesses and homeowners. This is a graet way to encourage people to visit your business ar utilize your service.

The October Business Mixer will be at Hometown Insurance. The date and time will be announced.

There is a new business coming to the old liquor store/clothing store/mexican Grocery store that is located on the corner of Fourth and Main St. Lori from Just Cuts has rented the space to open a full service salon that will offer cuts, perms and color. She is looking for a new name and is remodeling the space to accomodate her needs. Mark the barber will remain next to the Post Office. We are very happy to have a new business on the block and will enjoy the smoke free salon!

A special board meeting to discuss the budget will be hald Thursday, Sept. 25th at noon at El Paraiso. This will be for board members only.

Patti spoke about the progress for the Canyonville Pumpkin Festival. She now has an experienced coordinator for the car show. He suggested that we add categories for 20's 30's and 70's. Since the chamber had already committed to the trophys, she will pick up the cost of any additional trophies needed due to this change. She also announce that a billboard on I-5 has been donated for the festival to use. This should help bring in tourism. The Posters are being printed and will be distributed from Ashland to Eugene.

JoAnn will be coming around to sell the pumpkin flags for the chamber. If you don't have one and would like her to stop by contact JoAnn at Commonwealth Garden Shoppe. She also mentioned the marketing workshops we are trying to coordinate. Due to many prior obligations they may be put off until January. The cost will be about $10.00 per person.

Commonwealth Garden Shoppe will be throwing a customer appreciation party and sale this Saturday from 9:30-5:30. Everything will be 25% off and there will be free ice cream.

Ron Brusseau from Knoll Terrace is looking for support for 4-way stop signs to be placed on Main Street. He will be bringing this up at the next City Council meeting.

Cheryl from the City of Canyonville announced openings for the Planning commission (1) and the YMCA Advisory Board (3). If you are interested contact her at City Hall.

The bills for the 08/09 community bulletin board signs were mailed and need to be returned with payment.

A Tree will be planted at Pioneer Park in memory of Wayne Lloyd.

The Park Board, Lions Club and the Pioneer Days Committee will be having a fund raiser to help pay for a shade cover for the bleachers and stage area at the park. The details for this event will be announced, although a tentative date is set for November 13th. There was some discussion about charging a fee for some of the music events or installing more bricks if the drainage problem can be resolved.

The Chamber is seeking volunteers for their booth at the Rodeo this weekend. If you are available show up @ 11:00 on either Saturday or Sunday.

The Community bulletin board at Ray's will be rebuilt and Penny will be reprinting the ads. Minor changes will be included.

The LED Bulbs have been ordered and we need sponsors for the signs. The cost is $100 per sign and there are 24 signs. The Lions club, Tamara Hoff and the Canyonville Pumpkin and Music Celebration have made a sponsorship.

The Sockets for the power poles are still needing installation. We are waiting for PP&L. We are also waiting for them in regards to the new sign.

Patti Spoke about the Canyonville Pumpkin and Music Celebration. LeRoy Bell will be performing at 4:00 following the awards ceremony. There are still openings for business sponsorship of the contests. Tamara needs help with the food booth. The Carved Pumpkin, Tall Tales and Business Display Contests are still open for sponsorship. The progress of the festival is developing nicely as the News Review, KPIC and Creative Images have all agreed to help. The News Review will be creating a special section in the paper that will reach 47,000 households. There are advertising opportunities in the special section for the Pumpkin Festival. The chamber has collected $75.00 from the community for the music in the park, Javelin will turn it over to Patti.

Commonwealth Garden Shoppe will be hosting a Tomato Tasting event this Saturday from 1:00-3:00, all are invited to attend.

There will be a business workshop on collaborative marketing that we can host if enough people are interested. The cost is $120. We are looking for 12 people to put up $10.00 each to make this happen. If interested contact Joanne at Commonwealth Garden Shoppe.

The 150th Birthday Spaghetti Dinner will be Sept. 27th from 4-8 at the Masonic Lodge.

Tim from Canyonville Elementary spoke about all the beautification projects at the school. The landscaping that Seven Feathers donated and the painting of the front by the school district. Ray's will be taking the Pepsi sign. The South Umpqua Schools foundation will be raffling a Picnic Basket that will treat you to a complete picnic outing. The 6th grade is back at the school.

Meeting held at Serafino's

The Bed Races are on! After speculation that the bed races were canceled at this year's Pioneer Days Parade it is confirmed that the beds will race.

The water situation for the welcome to Canyonville sign was discussed. Jake was able to get permission from the City of Canyonville to tap into the water from the house that burned on the property. The stipulation is that a right of way from owners Darryl and Lillian Brown will be given in writing and the chamber pay for all the trenching and installation of the lines. Jake will be checking with PP&L about the electrical hook-up.

The Banners are still waiting for the PP&L installation of the upgrade of new power line hardware on the poles.

The Business of the month is Ken's Sidewalk Cafe'. The Chamber voted to spend $25.00 each month to have Diamond Sign make the signs. Pam will coordinate the sign making with Diamond.

We agreed to give our support to Donald Barrows of Computer Solutions in Myrtle Creek who gave a presentation at last weeks meeting about building a forum that members can use to discuss their opinions on issues concerning members and Chamber business. There was a lot of concern as to whether it would actually be used, but ultimately we will not know unless we try.

The new phone number for the Chamber is 839-4282. This phone will be located at the downtown Chamber Visitor Center that is donated by Pam at Bead Mecca. Pam will be adding a voice mail system that will be checked every few days.

The Community Board at Ray's will be rebuilt by Carl White and new signs will be made to replace the faded and outdated signs that are currently displayed. It is still unclear how many businesses will be renewing their signs.

Javelin plans to replace the windows at his business, Promise Natural Foods, and will donate the old window that was painted by Earl Voyles Jr to the Historical Society.

The South County branch of the YMCA is celebrating their 10th anniversary and want you to mark your calenders for a party scheduled October 15th. There will be a potluck and many events throughout the day. The Y is also exploring forming an adult softball league and later adding volleyball. If you are interested call Shanna at 839-6117.

It is time to consider the replacement of the bulbs for the Christmas decorations. Jake will check with Rod at 7 Feathers to see if we can still get the discounted price. We had discussed having businesses sponsor a sign and it looks like it will take about $75.00 per sign to replace the bulbs with LED bulbs.

Discussed setting up a phone line with an answering machine so individuals wouldn’t be bothered while trying to do business. Message would have some general info. For example meeting times and places. Machine would be checked every 48 hours to see if any call backs needed.

Javelin dropped off copy of bike path plan from 1999.

Reported shopping bags are ready and Letter of explanation about the bags being sent to chamber members.

Business of the month: there were three nominations. These will be presented to the general chamber meeting with the recommendation they are put in a "hat" and the winner will be drawn. The remaining 2 will be kept for August's drawing. This method will be in effect until enough nominations are received showing a definite winner.

Canyonville Calendar fund raiser report: Cost to create will be about $6.00. It was presented and generally agreed that postcards could be a more effective way to go. Less expensive to produce and perhaps more sellable. Packs of 50 to sell to businesses.

Idea discussed:

Have a "News Article Gathering". The idea being to create several short news releases about Canyonville to be submitted to the Local Papers on a regular basis. One press release idea is "volunteers needed" for helping with marketing, mainstreet Canyonville, etc.

Pam L. & Joanne will contact Patti Perry about advertising the Pumpkin Celebration as KLCC is announcing the 150th Party in the Park.

Meeting held at the Feed Lot

Jake was out, Jim Siegel acted as President. Brandi was out, Pam (Bead Mecca) acted as Secretary.

Judy reported that the Myrtle Creek Chamber has pulled out of the battle of the Chambers event that will be at the 150th event on July 19th at Pioneer Park. Press releases had already gone out, so some of the information will be inaccurate due to the change. The Canyonville team will consist of Jake, Jim, Javelin, Steve and Ricky. Riddle will still be participating.

The Chili Cook-off was not as successful as anticipated. This was due to lower attendance caused by high fuel prices and extreme heat. Judy made a motion to pull out of the event in the future and let the Myrtle Creek Chamber take it over. The motion was seconded by Chuck and passed unanimously, but Javelin feels it should be revisited in the future. A special Thanks goes out to Ray Bigelow for his support of this event.

Myrtle Creek has started their music in the park event. Here is some info that Ted provided about the event: The RCC Community Band will open our season. It's a 40-piece all-acoustic band from Medford (Rogue Community College) that has also invited a soloist from Salem just for this performance. There will be lots of Americana and patriotic songs played for the enjoyment of all who attend this FREE event, beginning at 6 p.m. in Millsite Park. Folks should bring lawn chairs or blankets & coolers with food & beverages. At this point there's no need to lay out blankets early, we have plenty of room. Ray's Food Place will have their BBQ wagon on site with a variety of tasty offerings. The Marketing Committee has ordered the canvas bags for the Welcome to Canyonville program. They also started the business of the month. The nominations were fairly slim for this month's business of the month. Jim drew a name from the nominations received and the July Business of the month of July is Tina Jameson Insurance, naming Katie Sheets as an exceptional employee, Congratulations! To nominate your favorite you will find forms at the bulletin boards at Ray's, The Post office and The City.

Javelin reported that the Planning commission meeting voted to allow the new veterinary clinic owned by Tammie Eichmann that will be occupying the building that was formerly Molly Bee's. We do not know yet when they will be opening, but are happy to have them join the growing community of Canyonville businesses. There was also some discussion about encouraging the city to be more new business friendly and how the chamber can partner with the city to encourage businesses to open here.

Judy made the observation that there are 3 city council positions and a mayor position open, so if you want change consider running. The deadline for applications is August 26th. She also mentioned that there is a new City Planner that seems to represent the best interest of Canyonville.
This month will be the first Chamber Mixer event. Commonwealth Garden Shoppe will host a Garden Party on Wednesday July 16th from 5:30-7:30 pm at their new digs at 425 N Main St. This is a great way to learn more about the business and meet other business owners. There will be food and music and an opportunity to network and share ideas in a casual after hours environment.

Dean announced the upcoming Golf Tournament on July 13th and the pre-golf dinner they will be having on the 12th at 6:00pm at the Elks Lodge. Sign up forms for the golf tournament are available at the Elks Lodge or the Myrtle Creek Golf Course. The dinner will be serving Chicken Parmesan and Prime Rib dinners for $20 each or a table of 6 for $100. The Scholarship winners will be reading there essays. There are new owners at the Myrtle Creek Golf Course. They are partners from Eugene who purchased the property at auction and will be operating the golf course with no interruption.
The Myrtle Creek Lions club will be raffling off a trip to Bronson, Missouri, as well as other prizes including to weekends at a beach house, 2 $50.00 gas certificates. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6/$5.00 and will be available the week of 7/10.

The Chamber sold out of tickets for the Gas raffle and the winner will be drawn at the 7/10 Chamber meeting. Due to the enthusiasm for this fundraiser there will be two additional gas cards raffled in the next two months.

Chili Cook Off is June 28^th and 29^th. Friday will be decorating the booth at Seven Feathers Casino Parking Lot.

Dates have changed for the Rodeo. NEW DATES are September 13^th and 14^th. BBQ will be hotdogs and hamburgers all day for both days.

SU Science lab-Visit tour went well. Jake and Jim attended. The science lab is getting remodeled and updated money has been donated.

Fundraiser Raffle has started for the Shell Gas Card. Going well.

Marketing meeting approved the welcome to Canyonville Bags. Bags will be the standard canvas tote. They will be given to new business’s, new homeowner’s, and the business of the month.

The Business of the month nomination boxes are located at City of Canyonville, Post Office and Ray’s. The business of the month will be chosen at the beginning of each month. The business of the month will have a sign in front of their business for the month and will be posted on the web.

We are moving forward with the downtown association. Meetings will be the 2^nd & 4^th Thursday of the month at the Chamber Center on Main St. Meetings start at 8:15 am.

Marketing Committee meetings are held on the 1^st & 3^rd Thursday of the month at the Chamber Center on Main St. Meeting Starts at 8:15 am.

Pacific Power Company has not put up the brackets for Main St. but made contact with Jake on April 1^st. Brandi will follow up with a call to Mark Brownson to find out what the hold up is.

July 19^th is the Chambers celebration of Canyonville’s 150^th Birthday. We will work on getting posters and advertising. Brandi will work on posters and Pam will work on ad on the news review online. Speaking to Bob Chaney regarding ad in the local paper.

Dutch oven table was built and Chamber was asked to pay for 1/3 of the cost. We voted and Chamber will pay $275.00 for the table.

Talked about Chamber Calendar. Ideas for the pictures were historical places in Canyonville and maybe surrounding communities. May get other communities involved in the pictures and events listed on the calendars. Brandi will get some sample pictures and Pam will find more out on the costs to make them.

Days Creek Alumni Softball Game. Starts at 2pm at Days Creek softball field. Tickets for the BBQ are $5. Javelin will be serving salmon and their will be hotdogs and hamburgers.

The Oregon Main Street Program is having a workshop on June 5^th in Bandon OR. They need to have a response from people who would like to attend. We need at least two members who will commit. Please see Pam at Bead Mecca for more info.

Welcome to Canyonville sign is in progress. Completion date is unknown at this time.

The 150^th Birthday of Canyonville is this Saturday 5/17/08. Starts at 10 am. BBQ 11am to 8pm. Live Band 8pm to 11pm.

Clean up at the park needs to be done. We voted on Chamber paying someone to do the clean up or volunteers to do the work. It was decided that Chamber would pay someone. Jake is going to call Jeff to pressure wash.

Lilly from the Umpqua Community Development Counsel was here for a visit. Discussion of their programs. Small Business Development, loans, counseling, community organizations, and communication with members to the public. Chamber will speak further about their needs and the Marketing Committee will pursue.

Dean with the Elks asked for a donation for the Golf Tournament. Chamber voted and a $100.00 donation will be made.

Stephanie Rogers was voted for the Chamber Scholarship for $500.00.

Bonnie Atkinson invited the Chamber to SUHS to tour the science room. They want to rebuild/remodel and would like us to take a tour. The Chamber decided to go and Jake Y. will call Bonnie to set up a time. The CV Chamber and the CV Lions club will go together.

Pam Y. asked the Chamber for $200 for Chamber bags. We will use these new bags for new business, and homeowners in town. We are hoping business will get involved with the idea and donate items or information about their business to put in the bags. In addition, we will be doing a “business of the month”. The drop boxes and forms will be located at CV city hall, the post office and Rays. Also there was a sign up sheet sent around to have businesses’ pick a month to do a business mixer. This will be a great way to get to know other business owners and patrons in your community and to let them know what you do and what you are about. Let us know if you would like to do one. We will let you know times and dates as we progress with this. The marketing meeting for the chamber meets the first and third Thursday (8:15AM) at the new chamber center located at 423 S Main St. (next door to Bead Mecca) Please join us with any ideas you may have.

The chamber discussed a downtown beautification grant. We are still in the start up process and this idea will be discussed further at following meetings.

Tamara Hoff gave a $5K donation from the Anderson Family in Harry Burdge’s name. Also, Tamara donated a percent of her commission from the sale ($600), and a check for $250 to go for the band playing for Oregon’s 150^th Birthday. Thank you Anderson Family and Hoff’s frontier Real Estate!!!

General Discussion about recruiting new members to Chamber

Suggested approach is to ask for chamber volunteers to go door to door, 2 members at a time with the following list of points to be made. We need a list of business licenses from Cheryl.

1. short history of how chamber started (Breakfast Club/Service Group)

2. what can the chamber do to better benefit businesses?

3. provide info on what chamber is hoping to do to help businesses

a. website

b. business of the month promotion

c. networking

d. possible business education/training (Joanne contact Small BusinessDevelopment Center)

e. other?

Other points made: Investigate cost of Business of the month sign from Dan Wallace. Obtain email address for chamber so emails look more professional. Include Mktg. Committee meeting dates & time next chamber meeting announcement.

Discussion: How do we attract new chamber members?

1. Monthly newsletter: Cheryl M. will edit. Articles can be emailed to her.

2. Start a Business of the Month : Put mailboxes on public bulletin boards for voting. Give businesses ballots to hand out, start voting in May, first award June. Canyonville Ace Hardware (Misty) will supply mailboxes, Bead Mecca (Pam) will get estimate on sidewalk sign to put in front of winning business and present to Chamber.

Old Business:

1.Connect w/7 Feathers, Misty will contact Danielle Feddar about ads in Shuttle.

2. Shopping bags: Cheryl will research source.

Possibility to use for welcoming new businesses and new members of community.

General discussion:

Knoll Terrace newsletter/ Barb & Bob Matthews. Try and get more people to participate in city events.

Website address will be included on/in chamber monthly mtg. announcement being sent by Pam Y.

Meetings will be 1st & 3rd Thursday of each month at 8:15 a.m.
April meetings will be April 3rd & 17th at the City Council Room.
May meetings will be May 1st & 15th at the new Chamber Info Center next to the Bead Mecca.

Goals: (not in order of importance)

1. Quarterly Newsletter combined with Chamber news and list all community meetings. Include articles to help businesses.

2. Link with Casino to increase awareness of downtown businesses.

3. Have workshops to teach advantages of marketing and skills to business owners.

4. Get reusable shopping bags to promote shopping local.

a. use shopping bags as greeting kit for new businesses and include information about chamber, etc. possibly coupons to local businesses.

b. discuss discounts or some kind of incentives to buy and use the bags.

5. Get a chamber site blog started (Pam L.)

A New Beginning

This is an exciting time to be in business in Canyonville Oregon. Through the effort of the many dedicated business owners we are in a position to map the future direction of the local economic development pertaining to commerce in the South Umpqua Valley. We are in the process of developing a marketing plan that will help bring business to Canyonville, and as business grows we hope to attract more new businesses to the City of Canyonville. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
